Lines I Carry

Lines I Carry

A line from a book I carry with me — words that stopped me mid-page and stayed.

"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live."

— J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

We read this aloud for the first time when my oldest was seven. She didn't fully understand it then. A few years later she brought it up out of nowhere — we were in the car, not talking about books at all — and she said, 'I think I finally get what Dumbledore meant.'

That's what reading aloud does. It plants things. You don't always know when they'll grow.
